Decorative inlay timbers to all the main panels, 16 deeply carved floral motifs around the entire cornice and fitted brass rods for nets or curtains. 19th century rustic Korean coin chest Ton Kwea
19th century rustic Korean coin chest (Ton Kwea). Elm and Baltic pine, the lid lifts straight off and the drawer is pushed in and out by a small metal handle. Nice patina.
Coin chests are highly sought by collectors of Korean antiques. Paper money did not exist in Joseon Dynasty Korea, and the coins were of very small denominations. They had to be strung together in large, heavy quantities to have any worth, so a strong and decent sized money box was necessary.
Here's a cool quote from 1898 on Korean money by Mattie Ingold, an American missionary physician who worked in Jeonju: "If Korean money were proportionately as great in value as it is in weight and clumsiness, the Koreans would be a very wealthy people."

Early 20th c. Asian teak/camphor carved trunk
First half 20th c. Asian teak carved trunk with camphorwood lining. Deep carving depicting traditional Chinese scenes to top, front, sides (handles incorporated into the design) and rear, attractive carved floral frieze borders around each panel. Sitting on a matched stand (shown above), standing without stand (shown below). The stand is countersunk but is too small for the trunk to drop into.
