Michael Gerstl (1908–1975) was a Viennese-born cabinetmaker who arrived in Sydney in 1947 and established M. Gerstl Furniture. The company specialised in custom-made furniture, primarily to other recent European immigrants, later expanding to over 3,500 clients, including several hotel groups, but extant pieces appear to be relatively uncommon. This piece is sooo large it was very difficult to photograph. The finish is so reflective that we had to switch off the lights, but that made our images look dull, so the compromise means that you really have to see the item "in the flesh" to properly appreciate it!
