1900 boxed set of six art nouveau silver plate buttons
William Comyns & Sons Ltd (London) c1900 (Rd 352928) boxed set of cast metal, hand pierced silver plate art nouveau buttons showing a young woman (red leather case with green velvet.) Boxed sets of silver buttons were popular between 1890 and 1910 and made attractive gifts. Some designs depicted classical scenes while others were in the Pre-Raphaelite or (as in this example) Art Nouveau style. Originally these buttons were probably quite expensive, even though not solid sterling silver. This is because they would have taken the craftsman a lot of time to make. Although the relief design has been cast, the metal in between has been pierced out by hand, a skilled and time consuming process (close-up pic beneath). $225 Shop 5
